Why Does Adobe Audition Keep Generating Artifacts After Applying An Effect?

I use Adobe Audition 3.0, and recently I randomly started having problems with editing audio files.  Now whenever I apply any effect to an audio file in edit view, I can see in the spectral frequency display that after the effect is applied, artifacts in the form of extra noise have been added into my recording.  I do not ever remember it doing this before, and the more effects I add, the more noise it adds.  Even something as simple as applying a really light reverb effect will now add noise to the recording.  Also, I noticed that the same thing happens when I try to convert my recordings to a different sample rate or do an audio mixdown in multitrack view.  I've tried all different effects with many different recordings, and they all have this problem now.  I tried creating a blank recording with only silence that I generated and applied effects to the silence to see what would happen.  This also added extra noise to the originally silent recording.  This proves that something strange is going on with my effects and is not simply noise that was already in my recording being amplified too much, it really is adding extra noise that was not at all in the recording before. I have tried everything from restarting the computer, doing a system restore, did a virus scan (which found that a VST effect plugin I had downloaded from the internet had a virus.  I thought that maybe this could have corrupted Adobe Audition's effect .dll files, but the anti-virus software removing it still didn't help), and also completely uninstalling the program and reinstalling it.  Nothing has worked, so I do not know what else to do.  What could have made Adobe Audition, in particular its effects, stop working properly? Help!
