Is it possible to copy/paste portions of audio from the waveform view into the multitrack view?

I come from a Non Linear Editing workflow, and I'm trying to wrap my head around the quickest and most efficient way to work with audio in Audition, and I find myself wishing that I had something similar to a "Source Monitor" in Premiere, where I can call up the clip, find the portion I want, and bring only that portion into the Multitrack window for arranging.

From what I'm gathering, it seems that the normal workflow is to just drag the audio file, long as it may be, into the multitrack view and chop and arrange from there. This seems to be really clunky and cumbersome compared to what I'm used to, especially when some of my ambience and foley tracks are rather long, and I have to find a track where I can drag them into without covering up other clips.

This also wouldn't be the biggest deal in the world, but the screen redraw and User Interface interaction speed of CC 2015 is so slow and clunky that zooming and panning around within a Multitrack session is painful and frustrating.

I wish I could just double click an audio file, select the portion I want in the Waveform editor, and paste it into the multitrack session.

Or perhaps there is something I'm missing?
