Please help me dial in my recording settings.

Hey guys I have done alot of YouTube voice work over the years but this digital stuff is beyond me haha. I really need some help on getting a noise gate working properly. I have a Rode Podcaster and am using Audition CC 2014.

My main issue is my mic is always hot so if I do so much as breath or move a piece of paper across my desk you can hear it and LOUD. I used to think a noise gate would just let your voice through and cut the rest of the stuff out. I dont know why I am having such a problem getting this setup with audition.

I open up a multitrack recording and selected Voice leveler and Noise gate but but the release is so aggressive that if even change the tone of my voice it will sometimes cut off or override me. I always shoot for -6 -3 db on my recoding but I usually do it in post to get the levels up there do to the fact if I sit that close to my mic you can hear me breathing and everything else. I set the noise gate to -20db but its still seems to be really aggressive. I have noise gating checked but I am not sure what the difference is between LEVEL DETECTOR and Gain Processor are? Which attack and release is which?

I guess I am just looking for some settings to get started so that I can sit at my mic and talk normally and be heard but have it mute out most the background nose. My levels sit at -47Db where my mic is sitting so I would think it could just fire up when it hears my voice but I dont know what is going on maybe I have a setting borked.

Here are my settings.
